RIM’s Mission
Building Community with Uprooted People to Serve the Common Good
Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM) was founded in 1986 as an Interfaith Ministry whose purpose was to offer Spiritual Care in the detention facilities. As RIM has expanded to other services the collaboration between faith groups has brought volunteers together from many cultures and faiths to provide community-based services to uprooted and often isolated persons.
By bringing uprooted people into a community they are able to build trust and can begin the process of rebuilding their lives. Community–based support helps clients to prepare for employment and to make the cultural adaptation necessary for success. Not only does the community welcome provide friendship, acculturation opportunities and support for clients, at the most vulnerable time of their lives, but it is enriching for volunteers. By sharing faith practices, and cultural customs RIM volunteers are enriched and inspired.
Charles Tshiolmbo Katende
Executive Director, Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM)
Charles Tshiolmbo Katende has served as Executive Director of Refugee Immigration Ministry since June 2025, bringing to the role a uniquely powerful combination of lived experience, professional expertise, and deep commitment to the mission of RIM.
Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Charles was born, raised, and educated in his home country. He holds a degree in Communications from the Higher Institute of Audiovisual Studies at the National University of Zaire and later earned a certificate in Marketing and Public Relations from OZRT (Voice School Studio of Zaire). His early career began in national radio and television, where he advanced from a Producer-Director trainee to Advertising Broadcast Manager, eventually leading marketing and advertising efforts at a national level.
In 2001, Charles immigrated to the United States under extremely difficult circumstances. Arriving without housing or resources, he experienced firsthand the uncertainty and hardship faced by many newcomers. During this critical time, he became a client of Refugee Immigration Ministry, where he received support that helped stabilize his life and ultimately led to being granted political asylum in 2004.
Determined to rebuild his life and reunite his family, Charles worked across multiple industries—including hospitality, retail, technology services, and media—while supporting the resettlement of his wife, children, and extended family. His professional journey in the U.S. includes roles with organizations such as Marriott, NECN television network, and other service-oriented companies, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and leadership.
What sets Charles apart as Executive Director is his deeply personal understanding of the immigrant journey. Having once walked through RIM’s doors as a client, he now leads the organization with empathy, insight, and a holistic perspective that bridges both service delivery and lived experience. His leadership reflects not only professional competence but also a profound commitment to ensuring that every client is treated with dignity, compassion, and opportunity.
Today, Charles guides RIM with a vision shaped by his own story—one that affirms the transformative power of welcome, support, and community. His leadership strengthens RIM’s mission to serve refugees and immigrants with integrity, excellence, and hope for a brighter future.
